In a significant stride for sustainable energy development, a new 100 MW solar project is set to advance in Orangeburg County, South Carolina. This collaborative effort, a $100 million investment, is the result of a partnership between technology giant Meta, leading solar energy developer Silicon Ranch, and the Central Electric Power Cooperative. The project underscores a shared commitment to sustainable infrastructure and is slated to begin operations in 2027.
The primary purpose of this initiative is to supply power to Meta’s first data center in the state, a crucial step in the company’s ambition to achieve its 100% renewable energy target. Under the agreement, Silicon Ranch will manage all aspects of the project, including funding, construction, ownership, and long-term operation. Central Electric, in turn, will be responsible for purchasing the clean energy generated by the facility and distributing it to its network of 19 member cooperatives across South Carolina. This arrangement exemplifies how private corporations and local utilities can collaborate to expand renewable energy access.
