The biochar market is thriving, supported by organizations like the IPCC for its potential to combat climate change. However, industrial companies dominate purchases, leaving smallholder farmers behind due to measurement uncertainties and market biases. This perpetuates inequality, favoring Western producers over artisans in the developing world.

Yet, artisanal biochar holds immense potential, with the ability to remove gigatons of carbon annually. Biochar Life advocates for artisanal biochar, citing its benefits in climate mitigation, environmental cleanliness, public health improvement, and poverty reduction.

Challenges include doubts about biochar quality, biomass availability, and land usage. Addressing these concerns requires credible monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) platforms tailored to artisanal production. Additionally, utilizing urban waste and expanding industrial markets can sustain biochar production.

Technological solutions like Direct Air Capture (DAC) and Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CSS) are promising but not yet scalable or inclusive. Embracing artisanal biochar offers a sustainable, accessible solution to combat climate change while empowering smallholder communities.

Focusing solely on high-tech solutions risks exacerbating inequality and neglecting viable alternatives. In conclusion, recognizing and supporting artisanal biochar’s role is crucial for effective climate action and equitable development.
