Ripendra Awal, PhpH is a measure of how acidic or alkaline a substance is. A pH of 7 is neutral, while lower pH values indicate acidity and higher values indicate alkalinity. Biochars are normally alkaline and can influence soil pH, often increasing it, which can be beneficial More.D., a research scientist and professor at Prairie View A&M University, has received nearly $57,000 from Texas A&M AgriLife Research to lead a project on sustainable agriculture in Southeast Texas. He is joined by co-investigators Ali Fares, Ph.D.; Alfred Parks, Ph.D.; Md Atikur Rahman, Ph.D.; Ram Ray, Ph.D.; and Anoop Valiya Veettil, Ph.D.
The project focuses on developing biochar-based farming practices to address challenges related to drought and soil degradation. BiocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. It has important applications in environmental remediation, soil improvement, agriculture, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and sustainable materials, promoting efficiency and reducing waste in various contexts while addressing climate change challenges. More, a carbon-rich material produced from agricultural residues, will be studied for its potential to improve soil health and support crop production. With global food demand rising, the research will concentrate on grain sorghum, a crop known for its resilience in dry, low-fertility environments.
The study involves laboratory analyses, pot trials, and field-scale experiments to assess biochar’s impact on soil quality, plant growth, and water retention. An economic analysis will also be conducted to evaluate the profitability of various biochar treatments based on costs and crop performance.
In addition to research activities, the project includes an outreach component aimed at engaging local farmers. By demonstrating the practical benefits of biochar, the team hopes to promote sustainable farming methods that enhance productivity, profitability, and environmental resilience.
