Louisiana, United States—A newly launched open call seeks to support carbon dioxide removal pilot projects in Louisiana to position the state as a global leader in carbon mitigation technologies. Eligible technologies include direct air capture, biomass-based approaches, enhanced rock weathering, marine carbon removal, and measurement innovations.

The primary challenge facing early-stage carbon dioxide removal developers in the United States is the lack of structured commercial and operational support required to scale novel technologies from concept to field deployment. Navigating complex regulatory environments, securing initial pilot sites, and scaling measurement and verification systems often stall promising climate innovations before they reach commercial maturity.

To address these hurdles, Newlab, Shell GameChanger, and Louisiana Innovation established a collaborative open call initiative. This program provides selected innovators with strategic resources, pilot testing opportunities, and expert guidance tailored to advance carbon removal projects specifically within Louisiana. Eligible participants span multiple technological pathways, including biomass-based systems, direct air capture, and enhanced rock weathering, alongside measurement, reporting, and verification mechanisms.

The initiative successfully creates a structured pathway for deploying advanced carbon removal projects within a key industrial region. By connecting developers with industry-leading partners, the program accelerates technology validation while reinforcing the state’s long-term positioning as an international hub for carbon management. Applications for the open call remain open through November 13, 2026.
