In a move to take the pulse of the sector, the International BiocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. It has important applications in environmental remediation, soil improvement, agriculture, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and sustainable materials, promoting efficiency and reducing waste in various contexts while addressing climate change challenges. More Initiative (IBI), the United States Biochar Initiative (USBI), and The State of Carbon Dioxide Removal have announced the launch of a new Biochar Industry Survey for 2025. this data collection effort is designed to provide a comprehensive, up-to-date snapshot of the biochar landscape for the year ahead. This initiative follows a similar, successful survey conducted in 2023, and aims to build upon that data to identify evolving trends, challenges, and opportunities within the industry.
The survey is a key tool for these organizations as they work to understand and support a sector that is seeing increased interest from various stakeholders, from agriculture and forestry to carbon markets and environmental policy. By gathering information directly from industry participants—including producers, researchers, consultants, and policymakers—the survey will provide valuable insights into production volumes, market dynamics, regulatory hurdles, and technological advancements. The data will be used to inform targeted advocacy efforts, resource development, and strategic planning that can help to overcome barriers and accelerate the adoption of biochar solutions.
All responses to the Biochar Industry Survey are guaranteed to be confidential and anonymous, ensuring that participants can provide honest and transparent feedback. The time commitment is estimated to be between 10 and 20 minutes, a small investment for what could be a significant contribution to the collective knowledge of the industry. The compiled data will be used exclusively for research and advocacy purposes, with a final report to be made publicly available for free on the respective websites of the conducting organizations. This provides a transparent feedback loop, allowing participants to see how their contributions are translated into tangible reports that benefit the entire community. The release of these findings will be an eagerly anticipated event, as they will provide a quantitative basis for understanding the industry’s growth trajectory and for shaping its future.
