Marks and Spencer (M&S) has partnered with Black Bull Biochar (BBB) to purchase Biochar Carbon Removal Credits, launching a new initiative to integrate sustainable practices into its poultry supply chain. This project, which includes one of the UK’s largest poultry companies, Avara Foods, aims to enhance bird welfare and improve manure management on farms.

According to Avara Foods’ Innovation Manager, Sam Laing, the biochar will offer a “two-fold benefit”: it will first improve conditions in the poultry housing and then, when the manure is applied to land, enhance nutrient retention in the soil. The trial will focus on lowering ammonia emissions, improving bird welfare and productivity, and improving nutrient retention in the manure.

Funded through the M&S Plan A Accelerator, the project will run from this summer until Spring 2026. The partnership aims to provide a replicable model for other large organizations seeking to achieve net-zero goals and broader sustainability targets, proving that carbon removal can be effectively integrated into retail supply chains.
