The project addresses the challenge of managing regional wood waste while meeting municipal decarbonization targets and securing verified, high-integrity carbon removal credits. Standardizing carbon removal validation requires rigorous verification methods to ensure permanence, precise measurement, and transparent accounting across both energy generation and material output streams.
To address these challenges, the project utilized Isometric’s Biochar Production and Storage Protocol alongside Certify, the organization’s AI-powered technology platform. The facility converts regional forestry residuals into renewable energy and produces 3,500 tonnes of high-quality biochar per year. The resulting biochar is targeted for long-term carbon storage through application in agricultural soils across Europe and planned integration into built environment materials.
The certification delivers verified carbon removal credits while advancing Frauenfeld’s municipal climate strategy. The facility currently supplies renewable electricity and heat to 8,000 homes, demonstrating a scalable model that co-generates municipal energy and high-durability carbon sink materials from regional forestry waste.
