The Center for Transportation Studies (CTS) at the University of Minnesota is hosting a free webinar titled Innovative Soil Solutions for Sustainable Design on Friday, April 4, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The session will explore two research projects focused on repurposing waste materials for soil design and stormwater management.

The webinar will highlight the reuse of Minnesota-based waste materials—such as by-products from the mining, forestry, and agriculture sectors—to develop sustainable soil systems. A key topic will be the development of biochar specifications for use in stormwater infrastructure, including slopes, conveyances, and treatment systems. The webinar will also address the testing of engineered soil mixes designed to retain stormwater and support native vegetation in roadway applications.

Speakers include experts from the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Natural Resources Research Institute and the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Presenters will share insights into their work on biochar production, stormwater treatment, and the reuse of waste soils, with an emphasis on cost-effective, environmentally responsible solutions.

This webinar is held in conjunction with the CTS Environment and Energy in Transportation Council meeting. It is free to attend, but registration is required. Professional Development Hours (PDHs) and AICP certification maintenance credits are available for participants. A recording will be accessible after the event for those unable to attend live.
