The USDA Forest Service has announced $34 million in new funding to foster innovation and job creation within the forestry sector. Supported by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act, these grants are part of the Forest Service’s ongoing efforts to support forest health, create new market opportunities for sustainable wood products, and expand processing capacity. Funds are accessible through three primary grant programs: Wood Innovations, Community Wood, and Wood Products Infrastructure Assistance.

The Forest Service seeks proposals for innovative uses of sustainable wood in construction, renewable energy, and manufacturing. These grants will also help expand processing facilities and wood energy systems, supporting economic growth in rural and tribal communities. Eligible applicants include private businesses, non-profits, tribal entities, and government institutions, among others.

The U.S. Biochar Initiative (USBI) sees potential for biochar-related projects within these grant opportunities, encouraging proposals for products such as biochar-enhanced fertilizers, air curtain carbonators, and biochar for green infrastructure. These projects would support sustainable practices in agriculture, stormwater management, and horticulture.

This funding aligns with the Forest Service’s 10-year wildfire mitigation strategy, aiming to reduce fire risk through sustainable forest management. By investing in forest products and infrastructure, these grants address environmental challenges while supporting economic and community resilience across the country.
