Swiss Re and Carbonfuture have signed a significant biochar carbon removal (BCR) agreement, with Swiss Re committing to purchase at least 70,000 tonnes of BCR credits. These credits will be sourced from Exomad Green’s new facility in Riberalta, Bolivia. Biochar is a stable form of carbon produced by heating biomass like forest residue and crop waste without oxygen. When buried in soil, biochar sequesters carbon for centuries and enhances soil fertility.

Exomad Green’s Riberalta facility transforms forestry waste into biochar, branded as Technochar. This biochar, produced through the pyrolysis of sustainably sourced hardwood residues, sequesters carbon that would otherwise be released through incineration. The process not only stores carbon but also supports Indigenous communities, reduces deforestation, and mitigates fire risks by managing timber waste sustainably.

The agreement with Carbonfuture allows Swiss Re to acquire more credits from various durable Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) projects, beginning with the biochar project. The contract includes both carbon removal and avoidance certificates, with an increasing proportion of carbon removal each year, aiming for 100% by 2030. The deal also mandates independent third-party monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) through Carbonfuture’s MRV+ system.

This partnership marks a significant step for Exomad Green’s Riberalta facility, helping scale the conversion of forestry waste into biochar. For Swiss Re, it ensures a reliable supply of high-quality carbon removal credits, aiding in their goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030 with transparent and verified impacts.
