Renu Earth and Carbonfuture have announced a biochar pilot project in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, in partnership with a major sawmill. The collaboration will turn sustainable wood residues into biochar, producing certified carbon removal credits (CORCs) through Puro.Earth. These credits will be tracked using Carbonfuture’s digital monitoring, reporting, and verification (dMRV) system, ensuring transparent and reliable carbon accounting.

The project anticipates selling up to 102,000 CORCs annually, with Carbonfuture committing to purchasing the initial 1,000 CORCs. This scalable effort is designed to reach financial break-even within 20 months. Beyond carbon removal, the biochar will also be marketed to fertilizer manufacturers, creating additional value streams.

Renu Earth’s expertise in biochar production is supported by a highly experienced engineering team and cost-efficient processes, providing a competitive edge. Additionally, the project ensures abundant feedstock availability from the sawmill, enhancing its long-term viability.

The initiative also aims to benefit local communities and farmers through economic development, soil health improvement, and sustainable agriculture practices. By 2027, Renu Earth plans to expand to 10 additional sites, potentially generating up to 200,000 CORCs annually.

This partnership reflects a significant step toward scalable, high-integrity carbon removal, addressing global climate goals while fostering community impact. Renu Earth and Carbonfuture’s combined approach prioritizes transparency, scalability, and sustainability in advancing carbon removal technologies.
