Carbon asset management platform Klimate.co has announced a significant expansion of its partnership with biochar project developer Carboneers. The two companies have signed a deal for the purchase of 4,500 metric tons of carbon removals through biochar, quadrupling their initial collaboration from 2023.

This agreement represents a major step forward in scaling biochar, a nature-based solution that captures carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and stores it in charcoal-like material. Biochar also generates additional benefits for local communities, including improved soil fertility, increased food security, and the creation of sustainable job opportunities.

“We’re proud to work with Carboneers to remove thousands of tonnes of carbon while empowering smallholder farmers in India,” stated Klimate.co co-founder Simon Bager. This collaboration not only contributes to climate mitigation but also fosters positive social and environmental impacts in the Global South.

The growing partnership reflects the burgeoning carbon dioxide removal (CDR) industry. Mart de Bruijn, co-founder of Carboneers, highlights the collaboration’s role in enhancing the quality of distributed projects, demonstrating the potential of biochar as a scalable solution for tackling the climate crisis.

This milestone purchase showcases the increasing momentum behind biochar and underlines the crucial role of carbon markets in supporting innovative climate solutions with tangible benefits for both the environment and local communities.
