US biofuels firm Gevo has secured a three-year carbon dioxide removal (CDR) agreement with an unnamed enterprise software company from its North Dakota bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) facility. Environmental asset management platform Ceezer will procure and manage the five-figure volume CDR portfolio on behalf of the customer through to 2029. This development follows a recent corporate transaction for Gevo to sequester 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide at the same site, highlighting ongoing commercial activity within the domestic voluntary carbon market.
The primary market challenge involves establishing long-term revenue visibility and verifiable commercial pathways for carbon dioxide removal projects operating within the voluntary carbon market. Industrial-scale BECCS facilities require sustained corporate demand and structured procurement mechanisms to justify significant capital outlays for permanent carbon capture and geological sequestration infrastructure. Without secure, multi-year offtake commitments, project developers face financial uncertainty regarding the monetization of permanent carbon removals at scale.
To resolve this market hurdle, Gevo partnered with environmental asset management platform Ceezer to facilitate a three-year CDR agreement with an enterprise software customer. Ceezer acts as the intermediary to procure and manage a five-figure volume CDR portfolio spanning through 2029. This transaction builds upon previous spot-market transactions, anchoring continuous carbon sequestration operations at the company’s 65 million-gallon-per-year North Dakota ethanol and CCS facility.
Consequently, the arrangement reinforces market demand for industrial-scale biogenic carbon removals and demonstrates the commercial viability of integrating CCS with domestic ethanol production. The North Dakota facility continues to build upon a historical baseline that has removed and stored 700,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide since operations commenced under previous ownership in June 2022. By locking in multi-year commitments, Gevo positions its facility among the earliest commercial-scale BECCS projects delivering verified CDR credits to the US voluntary carbon market.
