The School for Climate Studies at Stellenbosch University (South Africa) invites applications for a postdoctoral position to explore biocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. It has important applications in environmental remediation, soil improvement, agriculture, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and sustainable materials, promoting efficiency and reducing waste in various contexts while addressing climate change challenges. More business models and their socioeconomic impacts. This position is part of the Horizon Europe project MarginUp! and offers a 1–2-year opportunity to investigate the feasibility and potential of biochar as a climate change mitigation strategy.

This postdoc will analyze promising business models in Southern Africa, emphasizing invasive alien trees as a sustainable feedstockFeedstock refers to the raw organic material used to produce biochar. This can include a wide range of materials, such as wood chips, agricultural residues, and animal manure. More source. The role involves examining feedstock supply costs, biochar production economics, carbon credit methodologies, and potential biochar markets. Additionally, the position will assess the socioeconomic impacts of biochar value chains, with a focus on their benefits and challenges.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in environmental economics, agricultural economics, or business management (earned within the last five years), a strong publication record, and familiarity with Southern Africa. The fellowship offers a stipend of R350,000–450,000 per year (tax-free).
