Enable Earth has initiated industrial biochar production in northern Thailand, converting post-harvest agricultural residues into verifiable carbon storage and functional soil amendments. Situated in the Wiang Pa Pao District of Chiang Rai, the organization’s flagship project utilizes abundant local crop by-products, primarily corn residue, to drive measurable carbon removal. By integrating pyrolysis technology into Southeast Asia’s agricultural supply chains, the initiative aligns regional waste management with corporate decarbonization strategies, establishing a scalable infrastructure for durable carbon sequestration.

The deployment directly addresses the environmental and economic challenges associated with open agricultural burning across northern Thailand. Following harvest periods, mass burning of corn stalks and straw generates severe seasonal air pollution and atmospheric carbon emissions while degrading agricultural soil quality through organic matter depletion. Traditional disposal methods fail to capture the energy or material value of agricultural residues, missing an opportunity to utilize renewable biomass while perpetuating local public health hazards and soil degradation.

To resolve these systemic operational issues, Enable Earth deployed controlled industrial pyrolysis systems designed specifically for regional feedstocks. The high-temperature process processes raw biomass under low-oxygen conditions, converting the carbon captured by crops during photosynthesis into a highly stable, aromatic solid. Operating since February 2026, the facility monitors key stability indicators, including maintaining a low hydrogen-to-organic-carbon (H/Corg) ratio of approximately 0.2, well below international permanence standards. Beyond carbon removal, the facility captures co-generated syngas and industrial heat to support circular processing operations.

The operation captures approximately 1,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year, providing traceable carbon removal credits for hard-to-abate sectors. The resulting high-quality biochar is returned to regional soils alongside composts and fertilizers, enhancing nutrient retention and water availability for local farms. By establishing an end-to-end framework—from feedstock collection to verified carbon accounting—Enable Earth has demonstrated how regional biomass management can simultaneously mitigate agricultural haze, rebuild degraded farmland, and deliver audited carbon offsets.
