A new coalition of government, corporate, and financial leaders in Canada has officially launched to drive demand for the domestic carbon dioxide removal sector. The Advance Carbon Removal (ACR) Coalition, an initiative created by the non-profit Carbon Removal Canada, brings together the Government of Canada along with major private sector players including Shopify, BMO, RBC, and Vancity. Founding members have already collectively deployed over $75 million into the Canadian carbon removal ecosystem, signaling strong early commitment to a market that could reach a trillion-dollar scale globally.

The primary challenge addressed by the ACR Coalition is the persistent market fragmentation and lack of a unified demand signal for carbon removal projects. While Canada possesses significant natural advantages—including favorable geology, engineering expertise, and abundant biomass resources suitable for biochar—projects often struggle to move from development to commercial scale due to uncertain financial backing. Currently, the absence of coordinated demand makes it difficult for developers to secure long-term offtake agreements or the project financing necessary to build large-scale facilities.

In response, the ACR Coalition serves as a shared platform to aggregate demand and elevate the visibility of high-integrity carbon removal credits. The coalition intends to mobilize an additional $100 million in financial support by 2030 through a combination of purchases, direct investments, and project financing. By aligning serious buyers and investors around a set of unified objectives, the initiative aims to reduce market uncertainty and create a clearer market direction, transforming Canada’s carbon removal efforts from a collection of fragmented pilot projects into a financeable industry.

The anticipated outcomes of this coordinated push include the creation of a durable market that can support between 95,000 and 130,000 new jobs annually. By 2030, the $100 million target is expected to have catalyzed a functioning ecosystem where projects can secure the capital needed for full-scale deployment. This initiative not only strengthens Canada’s domestic climate targets but also positions the country as a global hub for carbon removal innovation, leveraging local strengths to provide verified climate solutions on a global stage.
