Brimex Energy S.A. de C.V. announced that its renewable natural gas (RNG) facility in Lagos de Moreno has become the first renewable thermal project in Mexico to register on the CleanCounts Registry. The plant processes agricultural and industrial organic waste from the Altos de Jalisco region, utilizing whey, milk byproducts, swine manure, wastewater sludge, and tequila vinasse to feed three on-site anaerobic digesters. The resulting biogas powers generators connected to the commercial grid, with a portion upgraded into biomethane for vehicle fuel. Following an independent third-party engineering audit by EcoEngineers, the registration enables Brimex Energy to issue verified Renewable Thermal Certificates (RTCs) through account holder and marketer Cyan Energy S.A. de C.V.

The primary obstacle addressed by this initiative is the lack of standardized, registry-grade tracking infrastructure in Mexico to prevent the double-counting of renewable thermal attributes. Without recognized Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs), domestic renewable gas producers face significant hurdles in delivering auditable, transparent verification to corporate buyers and regulators across North America. This absence of verifiable accounting mechanisms historically constrained market access, limiting the commercial valuation of clean thermal energy generated within Mexico.

To resolve this tracking gap, the Lagos de Moreno facility underwent an extensive on-site engineering evaluation by EcoEngineers to establish a verified baseline of generation data. Integrating the project into the CleanCounts Registry establishes an auditable chain of custody, assigning unique serial numbers to each dekatherm of renewable thermal energy produced. CleanCounts provides the digital tracking architecture necessary to record, issue, and manage these RTCs, ensuring compliance with international reporting standards.

This registration establishes a functional accounting framework for Mexican biomethane, connecting domestic production with broader North American carbon markets. Corporates and auditors across the continent can now procure and retire Mexican Renewable Thermal Certificates with full transparency. Furthermore, the verified tracking validation validates the commercialization of biomethane under Brimex’s federal permits, establishing a operational blueprint for future bioenergy and organic waste valorization projects across Mexico.
