India’s Circular BioEconomy Innovation Hub (CBE-IH) is working to promote sustainable waste management and resource efficiency, with biocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. It has important applications in environmental remediation, soil improvement, agriculture, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and sustainable materials, promoting efficiency and reducing waste in various contexts while addressing climate change challenges. More playing a key role in its efforts. The initiative, led by CGIAR’s Nature-Positive Solutions Initiative (NATURE+) and the BAIF Development Research Foundation, aims to create scalable solutions for transforming organic waste into valuable products.
Biochar—produced by heating organic waste in a low-oxygen environment—offers multiple benefits in a circular bioeconomy. It improves soil fertility, enhances carbon sequestration, and reduces the need for chemical fertilizers. In India, where agricultural waste is abundant, biochar presents an opportunity to turn crop residues into a resource that benefits both farmers and the environment.
As part of the CBE-IH initiative, biochar is being explored as a soil amendmentA soil amendment is any material added to the soil to enhance its physical or chemical properties, improving its suitability for plant growth. Biochar is considered a soil amendment as it can improve soil structure, water retention, nutrient availability, and microbial activity. More, a livestock feed additive, and even as a component in wastewater treatment. By integrating biochar into farming systems, the initiative aims to improve soil health, increase water retention, and support climate resilience. Additionally, biochar production helps reduce air pollution by providing an alternative to open-field burning of crop residues.
The hub is fostering collaboration among researchers, policymakers, and entrepreneurs to scale biochar-based solutions. With plans to expand through “living labs” and “acceleration centres,” the initiative seeks to unlock biochar’s full potential in India’s growing circular bioeconomy. By doing so, it supports the country’s sustainability goals while creating new economic opportunities for rural communities.
