The American BiocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. It has important applications in environmental remediation, soil improvement, agriculture, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and sustainable materials, promoting efficiency and reducing waste in various contexts while addressing climate change challenges. More Institute and the U.S. Biochar Coalition have announced that the upcoming 2026 North American Biochar Conference (NABC26) will take place from November 16–18, 2026, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. Serving as the flagship event for the global biochar sector, the conference brings together producers, researchers, investors, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to establish unified standards, foster technical collaboration, and accelerate commercial-scale deployment.
A central challenge facing the rapidly scaling biochar ecosystem involves aligning diverse stakeholders—including project developers, end users, and regulatory bodies—around consistent quality standards, transparent measurement frameworks, and robust market adoption pathways. As the industry transitions toward industrial-scale carbon removal and soil amendmentA soil amendment is any material added to the soil to enhance its physical or chemical properties, improving its suitability for plant growth. Biochar is considered a soil amendment as it can improve soil structure, water retention, nutrient availability, and microbial activity. More applications, fragmented coordination among market participants risks slowing down deployment velocity and standardization.
To address this challenge, the conference organizers restructured the event to unite the newly rebranded American Biochar Institute and the U.S. Biochar Coalition under a collaborative framework. This partnership creates a centralized platform where technical research directly intersects with commercial implementation, providing structured forums for peer exchange, product showcases, and strategic dialogue across the entire biochar value chain.
The execution of this comprehensive event is expected to drive standardized industry adoption, expand commercial partnerships, and enhance market transparency across North America. By gathering international leaders in New Orleans, NABC26 establishes a vital benchmark for trust, scale, and operational excellence as the biochar sector matures into an essential pillar of global carbon management.
