Biochar Today is committed to empowering the next generation of biochar leaders. This dynamic, virtual internship program is designed to engage and train promising individuals, providing hands-on experience in biochar research communication and digital marketing, community-building, and educational resource development. Interns will contribute meaningfully to the mission and vision of Biochar Today while gaining valuable skills and expanding their professional network.

Participants will benefit significantly as a result of new skill development, publications, networking with industry leaders, and resume building. The ideal candidate for this program is a graduate student or early stage researcher, but anyone with an interest is encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

Interns will attend regular meetings, perform programmatic assignments (blog posts, interviews, etc), and complete one project. Projects and assignments will align with the unique interests, skills, and ambitions of each participant. Interns accepted into this program should expect a time commitment of around 8 hours per week.

In general, opportunities will fall into the following categories:

1. Content Creation & Storytelling. Blog posts, multimedia projects, and interviews with industry leaders. Examples of potential work in this area might include:

  • Blog Series (ex. Biochar in unexpected places, Busting Biochar Myths, etc)
  • Storytelling Projects (Multimedia content highlighting the human impact of biochar, depicting personal biochar success stories around the globe, etc)
  • Explainer Video Content (Creating a series of short videos explaining key topics in biochar research and industry)
  • Biochar Pioneer Interviews

2. Community Development & Advocacy. Community management and program development designed to inspire and grow the global biochar community. Examples of potential projects in this area include:

  • Organization of Virtual Events
  • Biochar Challenge / Competition Design
  • Interactive exploration of global biochar projects
  • Survey-based market research

3. Resource Development & Education. Creation of materials to assist individuals and educators with interest in biochar. Possible projects might include:

  • Biochar to Beginners Video/Audio/Podcast series
  • Interactive Game Design (Designing an online educational game to promote awareness and engagement)
  • Biochar Toolkit for Educations
  • Case Study Repository

In addition to work and projects aligned to the categories above, this first cohort of interns will play a major role in refining the internship program itself, establishing practices, processes, and priorities that will inform the experience of future interns participating in this program.

Mentorship and Supervision

This internship program will be supervised by Biochar Today Science Editor, Dr. Shanthi Prabha. As both supervisor and mentor, Dr. Prabha will:

  • Provide guidance on assigned tasks and projects
  • Offer constructive feedback on intern work
  • Facilitate networking opportunities within the biochar community
  • Conduct regular online check-ins to monitor progress and address challenges

Interns will also have regular access to other members of the Biochar Today team in addition to our network of advisors.

Outcomes

Upon completion, interns will receive:

  • A certificate of participation
  • A letter of recommendation (upon request)
  • Portfolio-ready work samples showcasing their contributions
