PT Rekayasa Industri (Rekind), a prominent Indonesian engineering, procurement, and construction firm, is accelerating the development of biomass pyrolysis technology. This initiative aims to transform agricultural and industrial waste into high-value products, specifically bio-oil and biochar. By collaborating with national stakeholders and research institutions, Rekind seeks to support Indonesia’s energy transition and climate commitments through scalable, localized technological solutions. This development represents a significant step in integrating domestic engineering expertise with global carbon reduction strategies.

Indonesia faces significant challenges regarding the management of vast quantities of biomass waste, particularly residues from its palm oil and timber industries. These materials often undergo inefficient disposal or natural decomposition, which releases methane and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Furthermore, the nation requires a rapid transition away from fossil fuel dependence to meet international carbon reduction targets. However, existing renewable energy infrastructure often lacks the sophisticated thermal conversion processes necessary to handle diverse feedstocks at an industrial scale.

To address these issues, Rekind is deploying advanced pyrolysis systems designed to process biomass in an oxygen-deprived environment at high temperatures. This technology focuses on optimizing the yields of bio-oil—a renewable liquid fuel—and biochar, a stable form of sequestered carbon. The approach involves leveraging local engineering capabilities to create robust systems that can be integrated into existing industrial clusters. By doing so, the company reduces logistics costs and maximizes the circularity of waste streams within the Indonesian archipelago.

The implementation of this technology has yielded several strategic outcomes, including the production of sustainable bio-oil for industrial heating and the creation of biochar for long-term carbon sequestration. These developments provide a roadmap for Indonesia to reduce its carbon footprint while bolstering national energy independence. By domesticating the engineering and manufacturing of pyrolysis components, Rekind is also fostering a specialized workforce and reducing the industrial sector’s reliance on imported energy technologies.
