Verra has announced that its biochar methodology (VM0044) and improved forest management methodology (VM0045) have been officially endorsed by the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM). This endorsement means both approaches have been certified as meeting the highest global standards for environmental integrity and scientific rigor, aligning them with the ICVCM’s Core Carbon Principles (CCP).

This approval is a major milestone for the biochar sector, providing a strong signal of confidence to project developers, investors, and buyers. The ICVCM’s stamp of approval ensures that carbon credits generated under Verra’s VM0044 methodology are of the highest quality, leading to real, measurable, and long-lasting climate impacts. For an industry that relies on trust and verifiable climate action, this endorsement helps to solidify biochar’s position as a credible and high-integrity solution for carbon sequestration.

Verra’s CEO, Mandy Rambharos, highlighted the importance of this endorsement, stating it validates the rigor behind their methodologies. The biochar methodology specifically focuses on transforming waste biomass into a stable form of carbon for long-term storage in soil or other products, creating a permanent climate solution. By meeting the stringent CCP criteria, Verra is helping to ensure that the voluntary carbon market is functioning effectively and delivering genuine climate benefits. This development provides a powerful boost to the biochar industry’s credibility and potential for scaling up its positive climate impact.
