Charm Industrial has announced a strategic partnership with Mangrove Systems to overhaul and scale its digital measurement, reporting, and verification (dMRV) infrastructure, a crucial step in the company’s journey toward gigaton-scale carbon removal. This collaboration is designed to allow Charm to focus on its core mission—producing high-quality, durable carbon removal—while leveraging Mangrove’s specialized dMRV platform to manage the increasing complexity of its operations.
Robust MRV has always been fundamental to Charm’s business model. They initially developed an in-house platform called Ledger in 2022, which provided the necessary transparency as they scaled from prototype to initial production. However, as Charm’s operations grew into a distributed network of sites and partners across the United States, the limitations of maintaining a custom system became apparent. The need for shared MRV infrastructure and the push to improve Time to Verification—the span between bio-oil injection and credit issuance—by integrating diverse data streams and automating audits, necessitated a dedicated, robust solution.
After evaluating market alternatives, Charm selected Mangrove based on several key factors. Mangrove offered the configurability required to adapt to Charm’s unique bio-oil sequestration process, avoiding a one-size-fits-all model. Crucially, the platform could handle Charm’s co-production model—producing both bio-oil and biochar—tracking carbon flows across both streams. Furthermore, Mangrove’s advanced features, including mass balance accounting and sophisticated tools for reducing human error, offered the rigor and accuracy necessary for carbon removal claims.
A powerful aspect of the partnership is the platform’s ability to seamlessly transmit verified data directly to registry partners like Isometric, eliminating manual steps and expediting credit issuance. Charm’s September removals are now fully running on this new infrastructure, and the early outcomes show significant efficiency gains in closing reporting periods. By offloading the maintenance of a complex software platform, Charm’s engineering team can now refocus on the unique hardware and operational challenges of scaling industrial carbon removal, positioning the company for its global expansion.
