Biochar is drawing growing attention as a versatile solution in agriculture, infrastructure, and climate mitigation. Ahead of the 2025 North American Biochar Conference—set for September 15–18 in Minneapolis—the U.S. Biochar Initiative (USBI) is highlighting how the sector is shifting from niche applications to broader, market-driven adoption.

One of the major themes of the conference is the expansion of biochar into new use cases, particularly in controlled environment agriculture (CEA). Researchers and vertical farmers are exploring how biochar-enhanced substrates can reduce nutrient runoff, improve water retention, and stabilize root zones—offering potential efficiency gains in hydroponic and greenhouse systems.

Beyond agriculture, biochar is making inroads in infrastructure. Applications in concrete and stormwater filtration show promise for both carbon sequestration and municipal resilience. Minneapolis itself is emerging as a leader, with construction underway on North America’s first city-run biochar production facility. The facility exemplifies how cities can integrate biochar into waste and climate strategies.

Conference attendees will have the opportunity to tour the Minneapolis facility and visit local farms and research sites. These field tours will provide insight into how biochar is being implemented across sectors.

As USBI positions biochar as both an environmental and economic tool, the 2025 conference is expected to mark a shift toward more commercial-scale applications. With increasing demand and innovation, biochar is poised to become a key player in sustainable development strategies across the United States.
