Verde Resources has marked a milestone in sustainable infrastructure by securing the world’s first Biochar Carbon Removal Credits (BCRCs) from asphalt, issued through Puro.earth.

In a proof-of-concept at the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT), the company partnered with Oregon Biochar Solutions to produce and lay 110 tons of cold mix asphalt blended with 5 tons of biochar. Completed in December 2024, the project yielded 8 tons of certified carbon credits, which were promptly pre-purchased by a major financial institution focused on carbon removals.

This development represents a significant step forward for carbon-negative construction materials. Cold mix asphalt integrated with biochar not only stores carbon but also eliminates the need for heat or solvents, extending the paving season and reducing emissions. The approach—odorless and safer for workers—has been validated under real-world conditions for durability and climate resilience.

Verde’s CEO, Jack Wong, positions the Bio-Asphalt innovation as both an economic and environmental win, enabling asphalt producers to tap into carbon markets while reducing costs. Puro.earth and GECA, the verifier of Verde’s Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) claims, have endorsed the methodology, aligning it with UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Looking ahead, Verde plans to scale rapidly, targeting 5,000 tCO₂eq removal by 2026 and 50,000 tCO₂eq annually by 2030. With contracts underway in the emissions-heavy construction sector, this proof-of-concept signals a scalable path toward net-zero infrastructure at competitive life cycle costs.
