This new organization is designed to unite a diverse range of stakeholders to expand the use of woody biomass as a versatile, renewable carbon solution sourced from working forests. By bringing together participants across the value chain, the Alliance aims to strengthen collaboration, advance supportive policy frameworks, and catalyze the investments necessary to accelerate the development and deployment of woody biomass applications on a global scale.

The formation of the AWBA reflects the increasing demand for energy, fuels, and industrial goods alongside global emissions-reduction commitments. As these demands rise, woody biomass is emerging as an abundant and scalable resource that plays a critical role in power generation, advanced fuels, industrial processing, and carbon removal. The launch represents a convergence among historically distinct sectors and highlights the growing need for a coordinated representation of the full woody biomass ecosystem as companies mobilize around common renewable carbon solutions.

Building on the foundation of the U.S. Industrial Pellet Association, which successfully advanced markets for responsibly sourced wood pellets, the AWBA carries forward more than a decade of institutional experience in global market and policy engagement. With the industry currently mobilizing approximately $2 billion in woody biomass annually to customers across multiple continents, the transition to the AWBA positions the sector for its next phase of growth. The organization will focus on fostering alignment and strengthening market confidence as woody biomass continues to play an expanding role in the burgeoning renewable carbon economy.

According to leadership within the Alliance, the creation of the AWBA is a direct response to how woody biomass applications are maturing and evolving beyond traditional uses. Executive Director Darrell Smith noted that the Alliance was created to bring diverse communities together to ensure the full sector is represented as these markets mature. Chairman of the Board Tom Reilley added that the formation of the Alliance strengthens the sector’s ability to engage constructively with policymakers and partners, ensuring that woody biomass remains a cornerstone of international sustainability efforts.
