UPDATE May 20, 2025: Biochar World has ceased operations. As CEO, Tim de Rosen said in an email to Biochar Today dated May 11, 2025, “we have discontinued the Biochar World activity entirely. This was a strategic decision made in recent weeks as we shifted focus to other ventures that are better aligned with our long-term goals.” The venture’s lack of viability is underscored by the fact that, as part of its winding-down process, the company has refused to pay some vendors for services rendered. This abrupt shuttering and poor financial stewardship should serve as a warning to companies and procurement departments that might consider working with Mr. de Rosen and his team on future ventures.

The burgeoning biochar industry, hailed for its potential to address climate change, enhance soil health, and create sustainable solutions, is brimming with innovation and enthusiasm. Yet, for aspiring entrepreneurs eager to enter this promising sector, the path to success can be complex and fraught with challenges. From securing funding and navigating certification processes to understanding market dynamics and developing robust business plans, the journey of a biochar startup is often demanding.

Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with Tim de Rosen, a seasoned entrepreneur and the driving force behind Biochar World, a newly launched platform designed to streamline the startup process for biochar businesses. Our conversation, filled with practical insights and a shared recognition of the biochar industry’s unique needs, shed light on the landscape and how Biochar World aims to be a pivotal resource for newcomers and existing players alike.

De Rosen, a self-described “serial entrepreneur” with a technology-focused background spanning both private and public companies, including NASDAQ-listed ventures, brings a wealth of experience to the biochar arena. His foray into the climate and carbon space began several years ago, notably with the creation of the Hemp Carbon Standard, a pioneering initiative eventually acquired by Hempalta. This venture sparked an interest in biochar, particularly its relevance to industrial hemp farming and its potential to sequester carbon.

This exploration led to the formation of Renu.Earth, a project development company focused on biochar initiatives in Southern Africa. Renu.Earth’s projects, including a sawmill waste-to-biochar project in South Africa and an alien species clearing and biochar production project in Namibia, underscore a dual strategy: leveraging biochar for carbon credits and for its inherent value as a soil amendment and industrial material.

It was through the experiences with Renu.Earth that de Rosen and his team recognized a critical gap in the biochar ecosystem. “We realized very quickly the sort of journey that early-stage biochar startups need to go through,” de Rosen explained, highlighting the multifaceted challenges of “getting registered, certified, securing offtake agreements, and obtaining funding.” This realization was the catalyst for Biochar World, initially conceived as Biochar Funding in November 2024, before evolving into its broader scope in December.

Addressing the Startup Hurdle: Biochar World’s Approach

Biochar World is positioned as a comprehensive solution to address the multifaceted challenges faced by biochar startups. De Rosen emphasizes that the platform isn’t solely about funding, but rather a holistic ecosystem designed to guide entrepreneurs through every critical step of launching and operating a successful biochar business.

At its core is a Software as a Service (SaaS) tool powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI). This tool comprises ten modules designed to guide users through the creation of a robust project design document. This isn’t just about ticking boxes; the AI acts as a dynamic assistant, trained in the nuances of biochar, challenging assumptions and prompting users to refine their plans.

“The AI is very, very clever,” de Rosen elaborated. “It will say, you know, what’s the purpose of your biochar business? Is it about carbon credits? Is it about making physical biochar?” The system prompts users to provide specific answers and then critically evaluates them, offering feedback and requesting more detail or context. This iterative process ensures that entrepreneurs deeply consider key aspects of their business model, from market analysis and feasibility studies to operational planning and financial projections.

The platform’s capabilities extend beyond project design. It can generate financial documents for fundraising, documentation for carbon offtake agreement requests, and presentations for selling physical biochar. Moreover, it facilitates ongoing business management, enabling users to monitor operations, track inventory (both physical biochar and carbon credits), and manage certifications and audits.

A Database and Beyond: Resources Within Reach

Recognizing the importance of connections and resources, Biochar World incorporates a dynamic database of equipment manufacturers, service providers, and finance sources. De Rosen notes that while registration in this database is free, accessing the full functionality of Biochar World, including the AI-powered tools and deeper database features, requires a subscription to one of their packages.

This database, populated with “several hundred” manufacturers and developers, alongside dozens of finance and service providers, aims to connect startups with crucial industry players. While de Rosen acknowledges that securing seed funding for nascent biochar ventures remains a significant hurdle – often relying on personal networks or corporate backing – Biochar World aims to bridge the gap by providing startups with the tools to become investment-ready and connect them with potential finance sources actively interested in the biochar space.

Competitive Positioning and Cost-Effectiveness

De Rosen readily acknowledges the existence of other players in the biochar startup support space, specifically mentioning Grain as a competitor. However, he highlights Biochar World’s competitive advantages in terms of both cost and scope. He points out that Grain’s upfront fees are significantly higher, while Biochar World’s starter package operates on a more accessible subscription model.

Beyond pricing, Biochar World aims to offer a broader range of services. While some competitors may offer access to funding sources, de Rosen asserts that Biochar World has cultivated a more extensive network, interviewing a wide array of potential financiers. Crucially, the AI-driven platform offers a level of comprehensive guidance and feasibility analysis that may surpass traditional consulting approaches.

“This is the kind of thing that traditionally a startup would have to either pay a consulting firm to provide them with information, which would cost something in the order of at least $30,000 USD,” de Rosen stated. Biochar World offers a potentially more affordable and scalable alternative, democratizing access to expert-level guidance for a wider range of entrepreneurs.

Lean Structure and Global Ambitions

Operating with a lean core team of three, including de Rosen as CEO, Paul Sheals as COO, and Jon Banister as Sales Director, Biochar World exemplifies the efficiency enabled by modern technology and AI. De Rosen references Sam Altman’s prediction of billion-dollar companies run by “solopreneurs,” highlighting the transformative potential of AI in empowering small teams to achieve significant impact.

While based in the US and operating as a division of Renu.Earth, Biochar World’s reach is decidedly global. De Rosen notes registrations from diverse regions, including India, Africa, the Global South, the US, Canada, Europe, and the Far East. Projects are also geographically diverse, including a palm oil plantation project in Indonesia, demonstrating the platform’s universal applicability.

Looking Ahead: Collaboration and Industry Growth

Biochar World emerges as a timely and innovative solution to address the growing pains of the biochar industry. By leveraging AI to democratize access to expert-level guidance and resources, Biochar World has the potential to significantly accelerate the growth and professionalization of the sector. For aspiring biochar entrepreneurs navigating the complexities of launching a business in this dynamic field, Biochar World offers a compelling platform to chart a course towards success. As the biochar industry continues to mature and its importance in addressing global challenges becomes ever more apparent, resources like Biochar World will be instrumental in fostering innovation and ensuring sustainable growth.
