Biochar nanomaterials (BNMs) hold significant promise for environmental remediation and sustainable agriculture. BNMs are derived from organic waste like agricultural residues and manure through thermochemical processes. These nanomaterials have unique properties, including high surface area and porosity, which enable them to effectively adsorb a variety of pollutants such as heavy metals, nutrients, pharmaceuticals, and dyes. Additionally, BNMs can improve soil quality and enhance crop resilience, making them valuable for agricultural applications.

Despite their potential, several challenges must be addressed before BNMs can be widely adopted in real-world settings. Current laboratory studies have shown impressive contaminant removal capabilities, but there is limited knowledge about their long-term efficacy, safety, and environmental impact. To bridge these gaps, further research is needed to optimize production and modification processes, understand adsorption mechanisms, and conduct large-scale field trials.

Collaboration across scientific disciplines is essential to develop standardized testing protocols and comprehensive ecological risk assessments. By addressing these research priorities and implementing robust safety measures, the sustainable deployment of BNMs could provide an effective solution for cleaning contaminated environments and supporting sustainable food production.

This review emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary research and evidence-based policies to ensure the responsible translation of BNMs from laboratory research to practical applications. By highlighting the versatility, efficacy, and potential sustainability of BNMs, it sets a framework for future advancements in the field, aiming to restore degraded environments and bolster agricultural productivity to meet growing global demands.
